Game-changing multimodal integrated transport project receives 7,5 million euro Marco Polo grant
The transport of horticultural products from the south of Spain to markets in north-west Europe takes place almost entirely by road. B&W helped to define a business plan for a Dutch maritime transport company that will completely change the competitive landscape. The plan went on to receive a 7,5M euro grant from the European Commission for its environmental benefits.
The annual exports of 1.500.000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables from Almería fills up to 300 truckloads per day for a 2300km-long trip to markets in england and Germany. The region’s first regular short-sea shipping connection offers a fast, reliable and significantly cheaper alternative. In addition it reduces the environmental impact of transport by about 63%.
With its client in charge of outlining the business model and establishing links with business partners, Bax & Willems was hired to support the business plan definition, facilitate cooperation between Dutch and Spanish partners and obtain external funding. B&W continues to support the consortium in the project’s implementation.
